Instructions to Timothy - Pastoral Imperatives
Keep the church focused
In 1 Timothy 1:3-6 Paul instructs Timothy to keep the church in Ephesus focused on what is essential. They must not teach or pay attention to strange doctrines, myths and endless genealogies that turn the members away to fruitless discussions. Things that my be interesting and set their minds into motion but only lead down a rabbit hole of endless speculation and discussions. A pastor should lead the church away from what takes our focus away from the essential: the plan of God, which is by faith. That which advances the plan of God. This focus has the desired outcome of a people who have love from a pure heart, a good conscience and sincere faith.
